World and Travel

Game Modes and Hardcore
ModeConnection
Single PlayerStarts a local world that does not listen for other players.
Multiplayer OnlineOpens the online server list after character selection.
Multiplayer LANHosts a local-network game or joins one by host IP address.

Hardcore becomes selectable when a saved character reaches level 50. Hardcore starts unchecked for each new character.

Hardcore death deletes that character instead of allowing a normal respawn. See Death and Remains for the normal death rules.

Exploration and Maps

Discovering a named area gives experience once per character and advances Exploring. A city gives 10 XP, another area gives 25 XP, and a dungeon gives 150 XP. See zone discovery XP for the reward breakdown.

The in-game map has local and world views. The compendium map shows mapped places and entrances.

Some monsters appear only during specific in-game hours. See spawn windows for their timing rules.

Temple of Valaark shows a special map instead of the normal map panel. The Temple of Valaark map also hides your marker.

Personal Map Notes

Each map note holds up to 80 characters. Each zone holds up to 50 notes.

All characters on this installation share their saved map notes. Your notes appear on that zone's local map, not the world map.

Temple of Valaark has no map notes.

Binding and Travel

Confirming a binding saves your current position and zone as your new bind point. A soul binder or Bind Affinity can ask you to confirm a binding.

Gate Scroll returns to your saved bind point without changing it.

Scroll of Binding requires level 30. Binding scrolls and binding spells cannot be used in dungeons.

Destination travel items teleport you to their assigned destination and consume one charge on successful use. Temple of Valaark blocks travel items before they consume a charge.

A travel NPC shows its offer and any gold cost before travel. Paid travel requires enough gold.

Portals and Entry Requirements

Some portals activate when you walk into them. Other portals require you to interact with them. Explore their destinations on the map.

BarrierPassage rule
ClosedNo passage while the entrance is closed.
Living monsterThe specified monster must die first.
KeyA key from any online party member suffices unless each player needs their own.
Level and total item levelYour character must meet each listed threshold.

A walk-in portal accepts a key from any online party member, unless it requires each player's own key. A portal you interact with accepts a key from any online party member. Each player still needs the required character level and total item level.

A successful portal transition removes invisibility, including resurrection protection. Entering a dungeon dismounts you, and you cannot mount inside.
